American Astronomical Society
Published Date: April 28, 2005
Program Information
Program Name:
Harlow Shapley Visiting Lectureships in Astronomy
Program URL:
http://www.union.edu/orgs/shapley/
Program Year:
2005
Program Description:
The Harlow Shapley Visiting Lectureships Program of the American Astronomical Society, a program of two-day visits by professional astronomers to college campuses, can bring the excitement of the modern astronomer's view of the cosmos to any host institution. This announcement serves as an invitation to colleges of all types (junior colleges, teachers' colleges, liberal arts colleges and universities, each institution not offering an astronomical degree) to participate. Visiting professors can contribute to the host institution's academic program and intellectual environment in many different ways. They can give public addresses and can teach a variety of classes in physical, mathematical, and general science, as well as astronomy. The level of these presentations can range from the elementary and non-mathematical to the advanced and technical. In informal discussions, the visitors can advise students on possible future scientific careers and can discuss teaching and curriculum problems with faculty members, deans, and administrators. During visits a talk can be given at a local secondary school, and we encourage such arrangements. The normal time to apply for a Shapley Visit is in September.
Program Restrictions:
Inviting institution is asked to provide $250 worth of support towards the visit. The institution is not expected to provide an honorarium for the speaker.
